Do you really need a website if you have social media?

It is a fair question, and one I hear a lot. If your Instagram is busy and customers message you there, why bother with a website? Social media is brilliant for small business, but it works best when it points somewhere, and that somewhere is your website.

You own your website. You only rent your socials

Your Facebook page and Instagram account are not really yours. The platforms own them, and they change the rules whenever they like. Reach drops overnight, accounts get locked for no reason, and features you relied on disappear. Your website is the one place online that is genuinely yours, and no algorithm can take it away.

It is where serious customers check you out

When someone is about to spend real money, they often look you up properly. A social feed tells them you are active. A website tells them you are established. It is where you can show your full portfolio, your services, your pricing approach and your story, all in one place that looks professional and considered.

People find you on Google, not just the feed

Someone searching "graphic designer near me" or "web design Cronulla" is not scrolling Instagram. They are on Google. Without a website, you simply are not in that conversation. A website is what lets you show up when people are actively looking for what you do.

It works around the clock

Your website answers questions, shows your work and takes enquiries at 2am while you sleep. It never gets tired and never misses a message in a busy inbox.

Socials and a website work together

This is not one or the other. The best setup is both, working as a team:

  • Your social media builds awareness and personality, and keeps you in front of people day to day.
  • Your website is home base, where you convert that interest into an enquiry.

Post your work on Instagram, then send interested people to your website to see more and get in touch. Each supports the other.

The bottom line

Social media is a fantastic front door, but a website is the house behind it. If you are running your whole business through a feed you do not control, a simple, well-built website is one of the best investments you can make. It does not have to be huge to make you look the part and bring in enquiries.
